Quantcast 2010 Milwaukee Bucks Basketball: Bucks basketball update

Bucks look to keep rolling

For Buck fans, the past couple of weeks have been nothing short of spectacular. They have gone from a team that looked like they were crashing and burning, to a team with a very real chance to make the playoffs. Milwaukee has won 12 of their last 16 games, which included a 6-game win streak that ended with an OT loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday. Nevertheless, Milwaukee fans have high hopes for a team that hasn’t made the postseason since 2006. Though to be quite honest, they haven’t been a good team since George Karl’s departure following the 2002-2003 season. Fortunately for the fans, Scott Skiles seems like he may be the answer for this team. His defense-oriented mind (which is hard to come by these days in the NBA) has helped the Bucks develop into a pretty good team. In fact, their opponents averaged less than 86 points a game during their recent win streak.

While Skiles has definitely turned things around, a lot of credit for the recent resurgence has to be given to new addition John Salmons. Salmons has really stepped up since the Bucks acquired him from the Chicago Bulls in mid-February. In eight games with Milwaukee, he is averaging 20.1 points per game, which is much better than his 12.7 points per game with the Bulls. The Bucks are 7-1 since his arrival, and the loss to the Hawks was definitely not his fault in any way. Salmons scored a season-high 32 points in Sunday’s game against Atlanta, but his team fell just short of beating the impressive Hawks. Even seasoned veteran Jerry Stackhouse has shown forms of his old self as of late. Stackhouse has averaged 15 points per game in the previous four games, and has proven to be very reliable off the bench.

If you just preview their game against the Wizards, it looks like it should be a cakewalk for Milwaukee. They’re at home, have been red hot as of late, and the Wizards haven’t been very good this year. But take a closer look, and you’ll realize that Milwaukee shouldn’t dare overlook the Wizards. The teams have met twice already this year, and Washington has been victorious both times, winning by scores of 104-102 and 109-97. With a win, the Bucks’ confidence would just keep climbing. They’re currently in 7th place in the Eastern Conference with a 30-29 record. They’re also 1 game ahead of the 8th place Heat, and only 1 game behind the 5th place Raptors. The Eastern Conference playoff race is heating up, and it’s looking pretty wild. The Bobcats are currently 9th in the East, but they’re a mere ½ game behind the Heat. It looks like it’s going to be a 5-team fight for the 4 playoff spots that are still in reach, and Bucks fans are really hoping that their team isn’t the odd one out.
