Quantcast 2009-2010 Chicago Bulls: Bulls vs T-Wolves

Chicago Bulls vs Minnesota Timberwolves Recap

After an inauspicious start to the month of January with three straight losses to the Thunder, Bobcats, and Bucks, Chicago righted the ship (at least temporarily) with a comfortable win over the Minnesota Wolves. The game saw emerging star center Joakim Noah post an exceptional 20-9-4 line while dominating the low post due of Kevin Love (9-10) and Al Jefferson (12-8). Additionally, unlike the Bulls other recent wins at the end of December, Chicago won comfortable despite Derrick Rose's struggles from the field (only 8 points on 3/7 shooting from the field) as Kirk Hinrich (20-4-7) and rookie Taj Gibson (13-9) stepped in to fill the offensive void.

It is tough to read much into these positive developments, however, because they came against an abominable Wolves squad that arguably ranks as one of the worst in NBA history. Furthermore, the win came at home where the Bulls are 11-7 despite a 14-20 overall record which suggests a crippling inability to win on the road that comes as a result of a lack of veteran leadership. Ultimately, the team remains offensively anemic, especially from long range, and will need to make one or some trades this season to become relevant. Interestingly, while Hinrich and his long (though relatively affordable) contract were largely un-tradable to start the season, the suspension of Gilbert Arenas makes the Wizards a viable partner. Were the Bulls to trade Hinrich for, say, Caron Butler, this would allow them to flip a suddenly expendable Luol Deng (and his albatross of a contract) as well as John Salmons and perhaps a pick for the cap relief of Tracy McGrady's contract or, more optimistically, All Star forward Chris Bosh. So, while this team is currently going nowhere, there are a number of ways to improve both for the short and long hauls.
