Quantcast 2010 NBA Draft Lottery: Washington Wizards get #1 overall pick

2010 NBA Draft Lottery Recap

Finally something went right for the Washington Wizards this season. Washington won the top pick in NBA draft lottery Tuesday night, gaining the right to select superstar point guard John Wall or National Player of the Year Evan Turner and hopefully start a new successful era in Wizards history.

It was quite a surprise for Wizards fans. The New Jersey Nets had the leagues worst record this season at 12-70 and had the best chance of winning the lottery. But the team with the best chance has come up short over the last few years. The last time the team with the best chance of winning the lottery actually did was in 2004 when Orlando went 21-61 and finished with the worst record in the league. They turned that negative into a positive by selecting Dwight Howard first overall that year. The Magic were lucky in 2004. The Nets were not so lucky this year. They received the third pick in the draft. The Philadelphia 76ers, who finished 27-55, hit the jackpot in their mind when they received the second pick. The Minnesota Timberwolves and Sacramento Kings round out the top five.

The Wizards went through a difficult season with the season long suspension of Gilbert Arenas, death of owner Abe Pollin in November and trading away All-Stars Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison. But brighter day seem to be ahead for the Wizards. Either Kentucky guard John Wall or Ohio State forward Evan Turner would help turn around the struggling franchise and either would be cheered by fans who are hoping for a different outcome from the last time the Wizards had the top pick. That year was 2001 when Michael Jordan selected Kwame Brown first overall. Its safe to say he was not the player the Wizards were hoping for. Now they can put that draft selection in the past. The future is now and the 2010-2011 season is already looking promising. With the return of Gilbert Arenas, salary cap space to attract free agents and now the number one pick, the Wizards can begin to rebuild and grow as a team. It will be an exciting season and the excitement begins with the NBA Draft on June 24th.
