Quantcast 2011 NBA Western Conference Playoffs: Round One - Los Angeles vs New Orleans

Chris Paul and the Hornets Level the Series at 2-2 Against the Lakers

After a nail-biting finish, it was the New Orleans Hornets who eventually came away with a much-needed win to draw level in a ‘topsy-turvy’ series.

The Lakers came off better as both teams traded blows early, but Trevor Ariza, who had 16 first half points and Chris Paul (of course) had other ideas. Paul would finish the game with a triple-double. Is there nothing this man can’t do? He had 27 points, 15 assists and 13 rebounds and was forever a danger on defence as his timely steals showed great hustle and helped to put New Orleans in the ascendancy.

Ron Artest carried the Lakers in the first and seemed unable to miss his shots, while Kobe Bryant started off very slowly and was 0 for 7 from the floor in the first half.

Where in the previous games, Andrew Bynum used his strength and size advantage to overpower Paul, in this one CP3 used his size to put the moves on the big man and run right by him for scores. The Lakers shot themselves in the foot in the first game of the series by having Gasol trying to guard Paul, a mismatch that New Orleans were happy to exploit. In this game, Paul found himself being guarded by another big man. Another mismatch that needs to be avoided if the Lakers are to win the series.

Despite Paul’s excellent performance, the Lakers remained in the game with baskets from Pau Gasol and a few from Kobe when he finally got his act together. He finished with 17 points and 8 assists but the Lakers were unable to regain the lead.

So the series continues and it seems as though these two teams are fairly inseparable from one game to the next. Just when one team seems to have the answer, the next game tells a different story. One thing is for sure, in order to win this series every Laker will have to be on the very top of their game. Eliminate the mismatches. Be clinical. Avoid turnovers. The big three.

Final Score – (LAL) 88 – (NOH) 93
