Quantcast 2011 Los Angeles Lakers Basketball: Lakers @ Kings

Lakers Grind Out the Win to Clinch the Second Seed

The Lakers were to conclude their regular season over in Sacramento against the Kings, who were really fired up for this one. They certainly did not make this an easy task as they attempted to put on a show for the loyal crowd in Sacramento, who could have been witnessing the last game to be played in ARCO Arena.

The pressure was well and truly on for the Lakers, who desperately needed a win in order to clinch the number two seed over the Dallas Mavericks who were snapping at their heels thanks to a five game losing streak going into their game against San Antonio on Tuesday.

A lot of sloppy defence by the Lakers allowed the Kings to get points that should not have been allowed. Despite being up by as much as 20 points, the Lakers seemed determine to relinquish their lead and the Kings went in front late in the fourth. They had a chance to win it at the buzzer but some solid defence denied them and took the game to overtime where the Lakers finally woke up and picked up the win.

A great game offensively for Kobe, who got 36 points and again, Lamar Odom got 22, but I fear that if the Lakers take their foot off the gas as much as they did in this one, it can only end badly for them in the playoffs. They were very lucky not to lose this game, despite having such a commanding lead.

Nonetheless, the Lakers end the regular season on a high by clinching the second seed over the Mavs, and go into the playoffs where they will face New Orleans.

Final Score (LAL) 116 – (SAC) 108
