Opening Night 2010: Let the Anticipation Begin

So much has occurred in this overly-hyped offseason of the National Basketball Association. The top three most significant free agents of 2010 have joined together down in Miami, perhaps starting a new trend that will continue for other lucky teams in the near future. The all-star players of the Celtics are ready for another go-round, this time adding both players with the last name, “O'Neal”, in the entire league, Jermaine and Shaquille, two former all-stars in their own right. The Lakers are going for a 3-peat, and the balances of power are slightly shifting in both conferences, with plenty more to come before October 26, when the 2010-2011 NBA season begins with a fantastic double-header on TNT.

The Miami Heat versus the Boston Celtics. It just sounds right for a season-opening game. The new superstar trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh will get their test right away against the reigning Eastern Conference champions. It's the ultimate showdown between old and young. The Heat have gone out and acquired some very solid pieces to share the court with the latest installment of “The Big Three”, including Mike Miller, Eddie House, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and importantly retained Udonis Haslem. Their opportunity will be there right away on opening night to prove that South Beach is ultimately the favorite to come out of the east this season if they can go into Boston and defeat the reigning champs. Rondo is only going to be better. Pierce, Allen, and Garnett are going to remain the consistent players they have always been. It remains to be seen whether Shaq and Jermaine will be able to significantly change this team or whether their age added to this already old team will bring the Celtics off their throne atop the Eastern Conference. This game is going to get the NBA season off to an excellent start. Expect a fantastically played game by both teams with the feel of the Showtime Lakers against the rugged Celtics of the 1980s. The styles of each team will clash beautifully to create a greatly entertaining game on opening night. I would personally love to see the Heat get off to an 0-1 start. Just saying.

The second half of the double header will hopefully feature the return of Yao Ming as the Houston Rockets watch the Lakers get their championship rings for the second year in a row. With Yao back in the mix in Houston, expectations are high for this upcoming season, with a playoff berth definitely on the minds of their fans. A full season with Kevin Martin should also increase their chances at getting back to the postseason, as long as he remains healthy, something he has had trouble doing in recent history. Aaron Brooks is the reigning winner of the NBA's Most Improved Player award and will only continue to improve, and the Rockets took care of business by being able to keep Luis Scola, another outstanding player who has nowhere to go but up. His clash with Pau Gasol should prove to be great on opening night, especially since he will have Yao supporting him in the paint again. The defending NBA Champions are clearly still the favorites to win the West again, with Kobe, Artest, Bynum, and Odom ready to play their consistent form of basketball. They added some nice new additions in Matt Barnes and Steve Blake, while also retaining Derek Fisher. I fully expect the Lakers to prevail in this opening game, but so much can happen with well over two months to go until opening night.

The NBA has been able to sustain some great momentum thanks to this incredibly anticipated and memorable offseason. David Stern can expect some of the best opening night television ratings in NBA history with the clash of the two best trios in the league to begin the night and the return of arguably the best center in the league against the defending two-time champions to close the night. Let the countdown begin.
