Quantcast 2011 NBA News: Robert "Tractor" Traylor has passed away

Former NBA player Robert “Tractor” Traylor dies of heart attack

Robert Traylor, who spent seven seasons with three teams during his NBA career, was found dead on May 11, 2011 inside his apartment in Puerto Rico. Reports say Traylor died of a heart attack. He was just 34 years old.

Traylor had not been seen for a few days, and when police in Puerto Rico checked his apartment, they found Traylor on his bedroom floor. Apparently Traylor had been speaking on the phone with his wife, who lives in Chicago, when the line went dead. She contacted the Bayamon Cowboys, the professional team Traylor played for in Puerto Rico, and they looked into it, eventually finding Traylor’s body.

“Tractor,” as he was known since high school due to his size, was drafted sixth overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1998 draft and traded to the Milwaukee Bucks for Dirk Nowitzki on draft night. He would go on to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets during his career, averaging 4.8 points and 3.7 rebounds over his seven seasons in the NBA. Before his NBA career, Traylor spent three years at Michigan, averaging 16.2 points and 10.1 rebounds his junior season.

Traylor had heart issues in the past, most notably having corrective heart surgery on an enlarged aortic valve in November 2006 after failing a physical with the New Jersey Nets. He had also battled weight issues over the course of his career but had reportedly trimmed down his weight recently.

Traylor attempted an NBA comeback with the Cavaliers in 2008 but did not make the team.

He may not have made as big an impact in the NBA as many believed he would, but his impact stretched much farther than the basketball court. Traylor loved kids and was heavily involved with a number of programs that helped children in the community, including the Special Olympics.

This marks the second former NBA player to die at a young age in less than a year. Lorenzen Wright was found gunned down in the woods outside Memphis in July 2010.

Traylor is survived by his wife and two children.
