Atlanta Hawks Road Trip Recap
Atlanta Hawks completed a 5 game road trip finishing a successful 4-1, their second longest road trip of the shortened season. For the Hawks success keeps rolling in defying injury issues and reports. Coach Larry Drew has done an outstanding job keeping the Hawks focused and has been mentioned as an early candidate for Coach of the Year.
The “Big Story” has to be the Hawks personnel depth and production. The bench has been the key to victory early this season averaging close to 40 points a game. Analysts were concerned about the direction of the Hawks after losing sixth man extraordinaire Jamal Crawford to the Portland Trailblazers via free agency over the offseason. Fans and sports media pundits thought the Hawks were moving backwards in a shortened season which also saw Hawks front office switch ownership.
Instead the Hawks signed 6 free agents to the roster and reloaded the bench during the off season. The rebuilt bench is currently shooting 81.9% from the free throw line and hitting over 40% from three point range. Hawks bench also received another boost last week when Kirk Hinrich returned to the Hawks line up. The presence of Hinrich and Tracy Mc Grady off the bench gives Larry Drew a more stable core of veterans to keep the second unit intact.
The return of Hinrich to the bench shows a vote of confidence in the favor of young point guard Jeff Teague. Jeff Teague took over the point guard starting position last season after Kirk Hinrich’s season ending injury. Jeff Teague is averaging close to 13pts, 2 stls and 5 ast this season and remains a valuable asset and piece of the Hawks future in Atlanta. This season Jeff Teague’s name was added to the NBA list of All Star 2012 vote nominees along with fellow teammates Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Al Horford.
The Hawks returned from a 5 game road trip but the schedule in February will be their biggest true test of the season. Hawks only play 3 teams with losing records in the month of February the Phoenix Sun (Feb 6 th and 15 th), New York Knicks (Feb 22 nd) and Golden State Warriors (Feb 29 th). The rest of the February NBA schedule includes Lakers, Bulls, Magic, Heat, Trailblazers, Pacers and 76ers.
