Quantcast 2012 New York Knicks Basketball: Knicks vs Heat

Knicks Blow Opportunity to Make Statement

Melo rises to challenge but gets little help

In a possible playoff showdown with long time rival the Miami Heat, Carmelo Anthony came up big with 42 points and 9 rebounds and proved why he is still one of the top-10 players in the NBA. Unfortunately, he went up against two of the top-5 players in the league and didn't get much help from the rest of the Knicks. Carmelo showed he was more than ready for the Miami Heat and their Big 3, but poor free throw shooting and lack of scoring from the rest of the starting 5 really doomed the Knicks. He scored 42 of the Knicks 85 total points and the rest of the starting line up only combined to score 19 points. Iman Shumpert, who was terrific on defense, never showed up on the offensive end, only attempting 4 field goals and scoring 3 points. NY shot 61% from the free throw line and were out rebounded 47-33 but still had a 4 point lead with 8 minutes left in the game. Then it all went down hill.

After the J.R. Smith 3-pointer that brought the Garden to its feet the Knicks led 75-79. From that point forward the Knicks were outscored 19-6 and continued to settle for long jump shots as the game got away from them. The Knicks are contenders, and they will put a scare into any team that has to face them in the Playoffs but Carmelo needs help ASAP! He has been on a tear since Amare and Lin went on the DL but this is the third loss that the Knicks have suffered where Carmelo has scored 36 points or more (ATL 3/31, IND 4/3, and MIA 4/15). They can't continue to waste those type of performances from their All-Star Forward. Amare should be back in a week but until then someone needs to take on the task of helping Melo lead the Knicks till they get healthy. Shumpert needs to remain aggressive; Smith and Steve Novak need to keep shooting 3-pointers, Baron Davis needs to stay healthy, and Landry Fields needs wake up! This team is built to do more than just squeak into the Playoffs but without help Carmelo will heading home after the 1st round again.
