Quantcast 2011-12 New York Knicks Basketball: Knicks Season Outlook

Melo-Drama; Can the Knicks survive without Melo?

What was shaping up to be a vintage demoralizing Knicks loss to a Memphis team without their All-Star forward, Zach Randolph, couldn't have gotten worse as Carmelo Anthony limped off the court with a right ankle injury early in the third quarter. After spraining his wrist in the first quarter of Thursdays game, hurting his back earlier this season against the Wizards, and tweaking his knee, is it only a matter of time before the Knicks lose their All Star for an extended period of time?

X-Rays following the game came back negative, but his status for tonight’s game against Oklahoma City looks bleak after not participating in practice on Friday. Following practice Melo jokingly said, “They wanted me in crutches, but it was messing my swag up". He also said that his ankle was sore, but he is out of the boot he was wearing after the game.

Without Carmelo, the Knicks 15th ranked offense is guaranteed to struggle. Melo leads the Knicks in points and assists per game with 25.5 and 6.3 respectively, adding another 4 rebounds a game as well. Bill Walker will likely get the start if Carmelo is unable to suit up.

The Knicks seem to be struggling to find a rhythm on offense with the addition of Chandler to the starting 5. Maybe it is the lack of a true point guard, solid defense or maybe it’s chemistry, but nonetheless this certainly will not help the cause. Stoudemire’s shooting woes have also affected the offense. His usual 17 ft jump shot that seemed to fall effortlessly last season for Amar’e has been off this season causing him to shoot 43% from the field. Even though he has heated up from beyond the arc, he is going to need to make his presence known within the paint and score some easy buckets if the Knicks are going to have any chance to win with Anthony.

Even with Carmelo, the Knicks would’ve had their hands full with Oklahoma City. The Thunder have been rolling this season, winning 10 of their first 12 games, with Durant and Westbrook shining. The Knicks host Orlando on Monday, a very losable game, but the day off Sunday should allow Anthony to be back for the game. Even at less than 100%, Anthony is a premiere scorer in this league and the Knicks best chance to win.
