Quantcast Charlotte Bobcats Preview: 2010-2011 Charlotte Bobcats Basketball Preview

2010-2011 Charlotte Bobcats Preview

2009-10 Record: 44-38, 7th in Eastern Conference; lost in the East first round, 4-0, to Orlando

Head Coach: Larry Brown, 3rd season

Key Additions: C Kwame Brown, C Erick Dampier

Key Losses: C Tyson Chandler, G Raymond Felton

Last season finally saw the Bobcats make the playoffs, only to bow out in four games to the Magic.  So, what did team owner Michael Jordan do to capitalize on this momentum?  He swapped mediocre centers; is Jordan’s ego so out of control that he felt the need to sign Kwame Brown and, hypothetically, right the wrong of taking him with the first pick in the 2001 draft?  Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace are a solid one-two punch and Boris Diaw and Tyrus Thomas are capable contributors, but until the addition of a game-changing big man and a stabilized roster become reality, the Bobcats will be, at best, still fighting for one of the final Eastern Conference playoff spots, and little more.

Charlotte also needs a point guard with more size who can create shots on demand. This is a team that’s solid at the wing and tweener positions but lacks the centerpieces at the point and in the low post. This is a gritty team, but it often scuffles at the offensive end and is accordingly forced to bring the opposition down to its level. The Bobcats need to be able to evolve into a team that can impose its will on other clubs, instead of simply trying to fend off or disrupt the forward movements of opponents. Brown is an elite coach (though always a restless wanderer), but bigger pieces are needed in the Carolinas if this franchise is to take the next step.
